The Ladies’ Lunch Club and their guests enjoyed a real treat when we visited the newly opened “The Sherborne” on the 10th July, one of the few dry and sunny days in an otherwise forgettable month weatherwise! Summer dresses were much in evidence.
We were warmly welcomed by the efficient and helpful staff (and a lovely and refreshing glass of Cava) before being served our luncheon. It is no mean feat to cater to a table of 27 and the service (like the food) could not be faulted. We had plenty of time to chat and catch up on one another’s news.
After a brief but very well deserved vote of thanks to organiser Joy, we were free to look around the house and gardens and we felt very privileged to be amongst the first to seen the fabulous renovations.
The building dates back to 1720 and is famous for its staircase hall, which features James Thornhill’s spectacular mural. This has been lovingly restored and I’m sure features in the photographs of every visitor – we certainly took plenty!
A rather surprising feature that featured in yet more photographs were the loos – especially the Ladies’ – you simply have to go and see for yourself!
In 1931 the house and grounds became Lord Digby’s School for girls until the 1990s and some of its ‘old girls’ took great pride in showing us around the various schoolrooms and galleries. How I wish my schooldays had been as rewarding as theirs.
The Sherborne is freely open to all, and well worth a visit – certainly an excellent way for our group to spend a most enjoyable afternoon.
