What a wonderful day we spent at Sculpture By The Lakes. I must admit I hadn’t heard of it before but an hour’s easy drive brought us to Pallington Lakes in the wonderful Dorset countryside.
When we arrived, many familiar SJLC faces were enjoying a morning coffee, and congratulating Joy on arranging such perfect weather for us.
Equipped with maps we set off in various groups to tour the 26 acres and see how many of the 131 sculptures we could spot. I’m not sure quite how many I managed but the peace, tranquillity and sheer beauty of the place were quite breathtaking, as evidenced by the numerous photos we all took. Around every bend it seemed that there was another stunning vista and a sculpture just begging to be admired and stroked – a very tactile experience.
As well as the sculptures, there were some fabulous plants, and the most adorable goslings who seemed quite happy to pose for photographers.
There were lots of lovely places to sit (or lie) and relax with just the sound of birdsong and some giant windchimes to add another layer of perfection to the day.
The wildlife is encouraged, and they are continually planting – this year they have planted a number of different forsythia varieties. There are boards explaining some of the new planting which is helpful.
The final very pleasant surprise was the Kitchen where we all gathered for lunch. Much of what’s on offer is grown in their own kitchen garden (though not my fish fingers!) and I think everyone enjoyed their meal before some final group photos and the sunny drive home.
A fabulous day out in wonderful company. Thank you for organising this, Joy.
