SJLC members were given a humorous and heartfelt insight into the training of nurses at Barts Hospital in the early 1970s, when Lottie came all the way from Weston Super Mare to enjoy a lunch with SJLC and regale us with some of her stories. A practised speaker, and proficient with her tech and slides, Lottie entertained us all, and evoked many memories for the nurses among us. It’s hard to imagine now that student nurses would put up with their skirts having to be a regulation 11inches above the ground, or that they would even know how to hem them to the required length…which was almost the first thing the probationers were told to do!
Fierce ward sisters, recalcitrant patients, the Queen, handsome registrars, Smithfield meat porters and changes to the NHS all featured in Lottie’s wide-ranging and highly entertaining talk which we all enjoyed.
