St James Lunch Club

‘My Brilliant Lunch Club’

For our April after-lunch talk, our members were captivated by an insightful and engaging presentation delivered by the knowledgeable local academic, Caroline Dakers, shedding light on the lost buildings of the Fonthill Estate and its colourful history.

Caroline delved into the intriguing past of Fonthill’s buildings and owners, which included a be-heading, immense power and wealth derived from slavery, sexual misconduct, and a penchant for collecting glittery trinkets, as well as priceless works of art. It was fascinating to hear how large houses, churches and Abbeys had been created and subsequently demolished and the prices that they had commanded when they did change hands.

Despite the provocative nature of these revelations, the presentation skillfully balanced historical accuracy with engaging storytelling. Attendees were treated to a visual feast with slides showcasing paintings of the estate’s buildings, treasures, and portraits of its enigmatic owners, effectively bringing centuries-old history to vibrant life. It was an afternoon filled with enlightenment and fascination, leaving us feeling privileged to live so close to an estate with such an intriguing past.

Caroline’s book Fonthill Recovered, a cultural history is published by UCL Press and can also be read online.
