I’m really not at all sure which was the most fascinating or memorable of the facts Julian Hight shared last week, so many and varied were they.
Did you know that shrines in Japan are often old trees? Or that some people there believe that going round a tree x times increases your life span by x years, unless you go the wrong way?!
What about sequoias? They are the “biggest” tree in the world as measured in quantity of timber but they are not the tallest trees nor the fattest.
In Britain we have less forest than other countries but we have more ancient and venerable trees. That’s consoling, and a useful argument. I’m sure we shall all look at trees rather differently now. Sue Dawson
